Sixteen Canadian police officers, including twelve Quebecers, will be deployed to Paris this summer to ensure security during the 2024 Olympics.
The Security of Quebec (SQ), headed by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), will be responsible for the operational coordination of this mission.
Among the Quebec Police officers, we find ten members of the Sûreté du Québec, an officer from the Longueuil Metropolitan Police Service as well as a member of the Mirabel Police Service. Three more Canadian police forces will complete the national delegation, the Canadian Police Command said Thursday in a press release.
Therefore, police officers or dog teams will also be sent from Ottawa, Calgary and West Vancouver.
“This mission focuses on customer experience and aims to proactively respond to needs on the ground, among other things, by sharing knowledge from mixed teams made up of police officers from different countries and speaking different languages,” the SQ added.
Having a familiar uniform for Canadian tourists would help reassure people about the Olympic sites, the press release said.
The 2024 Summer Olympics will be held from July 26 to August 11 in Paris. France called on the 45 countries that agreed to contribute to the security of this global event to protect the expected 15 million tourists.
At the beginning of January, Agence France-Presse reported that France had requested assistance from 46 foreign partners for “approximately 2,185 reinforcements of internal security forces.”
