Three people were injured after two separate shark attacks, 90 minutes apart, off the coast of Florida on Friday.
The first attack occurred at Water Sound Beach at 1:20 p.m. A 45-year-old woman was swimming with her husband when a shark bit her in the stomach, pelvis and left arm, Fire District Chief Ryan Crawford told NBC News.
The woman was taken to hospital in critical condition. His left arm was amputated.
On the same day, just before 3 p.m., two girls, ages 15 and 17, were injured following a shark attack, just six kilometers from the first attack, near Seacrest Beach, the area's chief firefighter said at a news conference.
One victim suffered “severe upper and lower extremity injuries, requiring the use of a tourniquet,” Ryan Crawford said. The other victim suffered minor injuries to his right foot.
For the fire district chief, this situation is an “anomaly.” “We know we share the waters with sharks. Although it is tragic, we know there are still sharks in the water.”
The last shark attack in Florida was in 2021.
All beaches in the area were closed after the first attack.
Authorities asked swimmers to be extremely careful near the water.
