Shea Weber has retired, according to Jonathan Drouin

When asked to comment on Webber’s attendance and visit to Climate Pledge Arena a few hours before the game against Kraken, Quebec was very clear.

While he admitted that Webber did not announce it to the rest of the team in such a direct way, Jonathan Drouin claimed that everyone expected it.

The striker talked about his captain in the past tense and praised him great career.

If Webber formalizes his retirement, Canadians will have to pay a fine of a few hundred thousand dollars for the advantage the team enjoyed when the captain’s actual salary exceeded the impact below the salary cap. The shock would be very different from the Nashville Predators who awarded him his violent contract back in 2012 by matching the Philadelphia Flyers’ hostile display.

Preds is expected to pay a fine of more than $24.5 million spread over a few years. The salary impact would be less than the cap at $7,857,143 for three seasons and $999,999 for the fourth year.

Note, however, that the Canadian made it clear that Weber had not signed any papers and had not yet retired. It’s still officially on the long-running injury list.

The situation is strangely similar to that of star defender Chris Brugger a few years ago. Pronger was no longer seen on the NHL ice after the 2011-2012 season, but he did not announce his retirement until his contract expired in 2017. Meanwhile, Pronger served on the Bettman Circuit Disciplinary Committee.

Webber declined to meet with the media on Tuesday.

Evans on the sidelines

Meanwhile, Jake Evans will miss the game against the Kraken on Tuesday night.
