This time California, which is regularly affected by wildfires, is experiencing an unusual fire in January, forcing evacuations and the closure of a highway since Friday evening.
The National Weather Service described the event as “surreal fire behaviour, given the humidity in October and December” in the area.
The so-called Colorado Fire, which affected the Big Sur strip, reached nearly 607 hectares on Saturday night, according to the BBC.
Firefighters from 13 fire stations were sent to the scene to try to control the extent of the fire.
According to the National Weather Service, this area “has few, if any, fires.”
“It appears that the prolonged dry period is acting as a chronic problem as rains and recent winters do not help prevent the spread of wildfires,” she said in a statement posted on Saturday morning on Twitter.
The district’s Department of Transportation said on social media that part of Highway 1 was also closed in both directions for about 34 kilometers.
Several eviction orders have also been issued in Monterey County, as the number of affected dwellings has not been determined.
