He announced on Twitter that, after leading NASA’s science missions for more than six years, Swiss-American Thomas Zurbuchen has left his post. He officially retired from office at the end of the year.

The decision wasn’t easy, on the NASA blog, a native Bernese commented on the NASA blog, describing his work at the US space agency as “the most important and hardest thing he’s ever had.”

Two reasons prompted his departure. First, professionally, Thomas Zurbuchen thinks he’s the best for NASA. He explained, “I have had the opportunity to implement my best ideas. There are certainly other leaders with great ideas. Science deserves to be tempted.”

The 54-year-old scientist also believed that this change was necessary on a personal level. He wrote, “I have achieved the goals I set for myself.” The goal now is to learn new skills. His wish for 2023? Spend more time with loved ones and alpine skiing in Utah, USA.
