Islam Makhachev defeated Charles Oliveira to claim the lightweight belt in the UFC 280 Championship final in Abu Dhabi on Saturday.
Makhachev began the fight in a convincing fashion as he found himself at the helm of the former division champion in the opening moments of the opening round. However, Oliveira, as always, remained active on the ground and tried by all means to make his opponent fall into one of his traps.
In the second round, Khabib Nurmagomedov’s keeper blocked a jumping knee from Oliveira and then sent him to the floor of the octagon with a hard-hitting hook from his right hand. Lying on the ground, Oliveira was unable to come to his senses because Makhachev had already outgrown him to end the fight with submission. The official declared Makhachev the winner and crowned after 3 minutes and 16 seconds of the second attack.
After the festivities, Makhachev accompanied Nurmagomedov in the octagon and the latter indicated that the plan was to confront the featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovsky. Present in the crowd, Volkanovsky answered the call and went up to the octagon to confirm that he accepted the challenge.
In his previous fight last May, Charles “The Bronx” Oliveira made mixed martial arts history by becoming the first UFC champion to lose his weight belt, before stepping into the fight. ‘The appraiser.’ Despite his victory over the American Justin GethjeHe was stripped of his title.
This time around, Oliveira stuck as hard as he could, posting a 154.5-pound official weigh-in on Friday, just like his opponent. Having suffered his first defeat since 2017, Oliveira has declared that he has every intention of regaining his belt.
In the evening’s semi-finals, a bantamweight title fight between Jamin Sterling and Ty Dillachaux was clouded by a shoulder injury for the latter.
Since the first attack, Dilashu has fallen to the ground by the division champion. From that moment it was possible to notice that the fighter could not raise his left arm and the footage showed an injury. According to what was shared during the description of the fight, Dillashaw had already entered the octagon troubled by the injury and he himself confirmed after his defeat that he had been troubled by the injury since training camp.
So Sterling had no trouble dominating his opponent with the top spot throughout the first round. After visiting the coach between the two rounds, Dilacho continued to fight. Despite his bravery, the outcome of the fight was inevitable.
Sterling once again found himself in a strong position and after hitting his opponent without the latter being able to defend himself, the referee ended the confrontation in the second round.
