USA won the bronze medal in a crazy game

Chaz Lucius completed his hat trick in overtime and the United States beat Sweden 8-7 on Thursday to win the bronze medal at the World Junior Hockey Championships.

Winnipeg Jets chance hits goal in overtime.

Lindbom blocked Lane Hudson’s first attempt but the Swede was unable to get back. Lucius took over and allowed the Americans to win after several slip-ups during the conflict.

The U.S. had to play in that bronze medal game after losing 6-2 to Canada on Wednesday night.

“We weren’t too happy to lose against Canada, but when we came out of the locker room on Wednesday, we thought the medal was at stake,” said U.S. captain Luke Hughes. It’s important to USA Hockey and to us as a team. We gave everything.

Cutter Gauthier scored twice for the United States, which won its sixth medal in its last eight appearances at the World Junior Hockey Championship. Logan Cooley, Ryan Ufko and Hughes also scored.

“We didn’t want to be in this game, but overall it was a very memorable experience,” Lucius said.

Trey Augustin started the game for the USA and stopped 15 of the 20 shots he faced. In relief, Kaiden Mberego had two saves on 14 shots.

Filip Bistedt pulled the strings twice for Sweden, including the goal that forced overtime with 22 seconds left in regulation. Oscar Peterson, Leo Karlsson, Milton Oscarsson, Liam Ogren and Noah Ostlund also scored in the loss.

Lindbaum scored eight goals on 36 shots for Sweden.

It was Sweden’s second consecutive extra-time loss after a 2-1 semi-final loss at the Czech Republic on Wednesday.

Cooley opened the scoring less than three minutes into the game, his seventh goal of the tournament.

The locks opened up on both sides in the second period as the U.S. took a three to two goal lead but returned to the locker room tied 5-5.

Sweden took a 6-5 lead four minutes into the third period through Ostlund, but the lead lasted only 4:17. As he fell to the ice, Hughes surprised Lindbaum with a low shot.

“We didn’t lose this game,” Hughes told his teammates on the bench in celebration of the goal.

Gauthier gave the Americans the lead with just 97 seconds left in the third period, but Bystedt forced overtime.
