(Ottawa) Chief of Public Health Canada, Dr.Return Theresa Tam says authorities are “reasonably optimistic” despite the high prevalence of COVID-19 and the high incidence of other infectious cases.
“We are reasonably optimistic that the tightening efforts and restrictions are beginning to bear fruit,” she said in a statement on Saturday.
She renewed her message on the importance of maintaining strict public health measures in areas where COVID-19 is prevalent.
Although the average daily number of cases decreased by 6% in the week of April 16-22, compared to the previous seven days, the rate of positivity was 7.4%, up from the previous seven days, 6.5% from the previous week.
Another source of concern is the increasing number of people who are critically ill, which is placing enormous pressure on the health systems in the country.
According to data from Dr.Return Tam, all Canadian hospitals received an average of 4,167 patients from April 16 to 22, an increase of 22% from the previous week.
ICUs are not exempt from the severity of the current wave of COVID-19. On average, 1,268 people were treated there, an increase of 21% from the previous week.
As for the deaths, Dr. saidReturn Tam reported an 11% increase in the last seven day period.
Authorities have reported 78,729 cases of the variant, including 75,413 cases of the B.1.1.7 variant (British), 2,853 cases of the P.1 variant (Brazilian) and 463 cases of the B.1351 variant (South Africa).
“This is only the tip of the iceberg, as there are many other positive cases of COVID-19 with mutations that could indicate variants of concern,” says Dr.Return Tam.
According to her, the increase in the Brazilian variant is also a cause for concern. “Preliminary data indicate that vaccines may not be effective against the P.1 variant, which makes controlling its spread even more important,” she adds.
O’Toole was vaccinated
Conservative Party leader Irene O’Toole joined the ranks of Canadians who received their first dose of the vaccine on Saturday.
Mr. O’Toole was given the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine. He and his wife, Rebecca, got vaccinated in a parking garage.
We have just received our vaccinations. He said in a video that it’s safe, it’s effective. It is important that all Canadians get their vaccine. We must work together to fight COVID-19. “
