(Poznan) — The United States on Tuesday inaugurated its first permanent military garrison in Poland, which, according to the US ambassador in Warsaw, is seen as a sign of NATO unity “in the face of Russian aggression.”
“It shows that we are here to stay. It tells the world that the United States is committed to Poland and to NATO. We are united in the face of Russian aggression,” US Ambassador to Poland Mark Brzezinski said at an official ceremony.
The garrison, the eighth in Europe, will be responsible for coordinating support for US forces deployed in Poland and across NATO’s eastern flank.
It was created by order of the President of the United States in 2022 and will serve as the headquarters for 5H US Army Corps.
More than 10,000 American soldiers are currently stationed in Poland, the country through which most of the military equipment destined for Ukraine passes.
We greatly appreciate the permanent presence of American forces in our country. We especially appreciate it in the situation that Europe finds itself in, with Russia invading Ukraine and trying to rebuild its empire,” said Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak.
Front drive of 5H The US Army Corps is already working – so from Poland the US ground forces on the eastern side of NATO are commanded, the Polish minister said, stressing that the garrison was “important for the security of our country, but also” for the security of the entire eastern wing of NATO.
