“Next door” in Espace Triphasé

Last March, on the sidelines of the Contemporary Design Fair in Brussels, Espace Triphasé presented “Next Door”: an exhibition of artists and designers questioning the aesthetic boundaries between everyday objects and sculptural works.

In a minimalist parking décor, the Espace Triphasé a composé “Next Door” as an exposition alternative où les pieces of chaque artiste dressed in new narrations to travers the matière, l’imagination and the reflexion, en created des interstices for flirter avec the truth. Facing the traditional exhibition format, Triphasé here signs a reinterpretation of the commercial event by parking among the yellow bands each piece of the fourteen creators – Chloe Arroy, Juliette Berthoneau, Deborah Bowman, Destroyers Builders, Emma Cognet, Héloïse Colrat, Arnaud Eubelen, Abel Jallais – Alice Pandolfo, Janne Schimmel, Yoon Shun, Bram Vanderbeke, Nicolas Zanoni and Level Zero – in places usually imagined for vehicles.

Curated by three members of an artist-run space (Pandolfo, Zanoni, and Van Den Boogaerde), “Next Door” invites each artist and designer to develop a unique approach to tackling storytelling, even though they all have one thing in common: local and artisanal production of one-of-a-kind pieces. . “The exhibition allows us to discover new talents such as Yoon Shun, a Korean artist who recently settled in Belgium, who introduces us to traditional technique and whose pieces make us waver between rationality and sensibility, object function and abstract narrative. Echoing this knowledge, I respond to the works of Alice Pandolfo that advocate textile technique and attachment to the literal, while questioning regional memories through the use and incorporation of broken, forgotten or outdated objects, thus telling us about the connections that unite time,” says Zoe van den Bojerde, co-curator of the event.

Sailing from discovery to discovery, we come across the work of designer Arno Eubelen, who experiments with the sculptural possibilities of society’s junk. By decomposing and reassembling salvaged materials, fragments, waste and rubble, he creates pieces that bear witness to urban changes and the temporary state of everyday objects. Since its first exhibition “Please Talk Louder” in October 2021, Espace Triphasé has been pursuing a pioneering program in its industrial setting and aggressively showcasing talent that goes beyond the contemporary.. •
