Australian comedian Barry Humphries, best known in the English-speaking world for his role as Tom Edna Everage, a caricature of a wealthy suburbanite with pink hair, died in Sydney on Saturday aged 89, his agent announced.
Tom Edna, a bourgeois character, says her hair color is natural in a very serious and flamboyant tone, contrasted by glasses that make her clothes look extravagant.
Australians have seen him appear on stage in Melbourne in 1955 before landing roles on television in Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom.
In 2002, Dame Edna presented a performance at Buckingham Palace in honor of Queen Elizabeth II, who celebrated her Golden Jubilee. He did the same for the closing ceremony of the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.
