(WASHINGTON) Canadian International Trade Minister Mary Eng spoke with the U.S. ambassador to Ottawa this week accusing Canada of making a “big deal” of tax breaks offered to U.S. electric vehicle buyers.
David Cohen made the comments during a speech Wednesday at the Canada Institute at the Wilson Center in Washington.
The U.S. ambassador to Ottawa described Canada’s initial response to President Joe Biden’s plan to offer tax incentives for the purchase of electric vehicles in 2021. At the time, the tax break was limited to buyers of vehicles built in the U.S. by union workers.
Shanti Cosentino, Spokesperson for Canada’s Minister of International Trade, Ms.me Ng made his comments to Mr. discussed with Cohen, but did not provide further details.
He simply pointed out that the minister reiterated Canada’s commitment to working with the United States to strengthen North American competitiveness.
Cohen’s speech was intended to dispel concerns in Canada that the Biden administration’s policies were rooted in a protectionist breeding ground.
