French leek
It is called “French” shallot first and foremost to distinguish it from scallions. In fact, in Quebec, many people use the term “shallot” to refer to scallions.
French shallots give off a milder and more discreet flavor than that of onions. It is also more delicate than garlic.
Onion
Known for its strong and pungent taste, onions are a very common vegetable that can be found in most homes. We know yellow, white, red, green, etc. onions, but did you know that there are over 1,000 varieties?
How do you maintain it
French shallots: Preserving them is very simple, just put them in a dark, cool, dry and well-ventilated place. This way, you can easily keep it for about a month.
Onions: More complex to store, onions have different storage instructions depending on the variety. For example, yellow or red onions should not be refrigerated, but should be stored in the same way as French shallots. Most other types of onions will keep in the refrigerator for about a week.
How to cook it
It is possible to substitute onions and leeks in your recipes. You just have to keep in mind that both do not have the same flavour.
The advantage of substituting onions for shallots in some of your recipes is that, because of their delicate taste, they will take up less space in terms of flavors than onions do.
