The National Crime Agency (NCA) announced on Saturday that a 40-year-old Egyptian man has been charged in the United Kingdom for allegedly plotting to ferry thousands of migrants across the Mediterranean Sea.
Ahmed Ramadan Mohamed Ebt was arrested on Wednesday in Hounslow, west London, during an operation involving Italian authorities.
Investigators suspect he organized thousands of migrant crossings between Libya and Italy in the Mediterranean last year.
He appeared in court on Saturday morning and was remanded in custody until his next hearing in London at the end of July.
British authorities suspect he worked with networks of smugglers in North Africa to organize dangerous crossings on makeshift boats packed with hundreds of migrants.
