VANCOUVER — In a game that saw both teams play soulless on offense and take multiple penalties, the BC Lions cruised to a 19-9 victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders Saturday night at BC Place.
Lions backup quarterback Dane Evans (5-1) threw a touchdown pass and was the victim of an interception. He finished his night’s work with 16 deliveries in 25 attempts.
Evans was sent into battle after Vernon Adams Jr. left the game after being tackled by Micah Johnson behind the line of scrimmage in the first quarter.
Among the Roughriders (3-3), quarterback Mason Fine finished the game with 32 successful passes on 41 attempts, but two interceptions.
Neither team was dominant in attack. The Roughriders outscored the Lions by 283 yards, compared to their opponents’ 231 yards.
Penalties and interceptions slowed many successful attempts to advance the ball. The Lions took seven penalties for 66 yards, and the Roughriders took six penalties for 56 yards.
The Lions led 7-3 after the first half thanks to a 27-yard touchdown pass from Evans to Alexander Hollins in the first quarter.
They entered the final quarter with a 10-6 lead.
Sean Whyte had all four field goal attempts for the Lions, including an attempt from 42 yards.
Nine of the Roughriders’ points came from three field goals by Brett Luther, including a 44-yard field goal.
The Roughriders will next play the Toronto Argonauts (5-0) on July 29 in Halifax. For their part, the Lions will visit, on the same day, Ilks Edmonton (0-7).
