Conor MacDavid scored a major milestone when he reached the 100-point mark despite shortening the season on Saturday.
He lacked no fewer than four points to cross this path. Although he had a difficult task ahead of him, he succeeded in a match against the Vancouver Canucks even before the end of the second half.
He first scored the ice-breaking goal, then contributed three assists in his 53rd game of the season.
The 24-year-old MacDavid became the ninth player in NHL history, and the first since birth, collecting 100 points in 53 games or less.
McDavid easily sits atop the NHL’s top scorer with 32 goals and 68 assists. Oilers still have three games to play this season.
Mission accomplished: McDavid has reached 100 points in 53 games!
Leon Dresitel scored twice, and Jesse Poliogarvey scored once for the Oilers. Defenseman Darnell Nurse set up two goals for himself.
Goalkeeper Mike Smith blocked 22 shots against Edmonton, who will finish second in the Northern Division.
By signing a fourth career season of 100 points, McDavid became the third active player with four points before the age of 25. He joined Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals.
JT Miller, Travis Boyd and Tyler Grauvac turned the red light on for the Canucks, who had been 2-8 in their last 10 matches.
Thatcher Demco has stopped 30 pucks for Travis Green’s men, who are in the bottom rung of the Northern Division.
Oilers claim a 6-3 record against Canucks in the seasonal series between the two teams.
