Still a kid, already a star. The US Zoo said on Tuesday that a monochromatic giraffe, without any of the distinctive spots of its species, was born at a US zoo, in an extremely rare event.
“The clean giraffe is very rare,” David Bright, director of the Brights Zoo in Tennessee, told AFP. He added that no such births had been registered since 1972 in Tokyo.

The little animal, still 1 80 meters long and covered in brown hair, was born on July 31. Since then, the foundation said in a press release that the matchless female has “thrived thanks to the care of her mother and the dedicated staff at the zoo.”
Giraffes’ spots mainly serve as camouflage in vegetation. On the contrary, this kind of event attracts the attention of the media all over the world.

The zoo hopes that the many articles devoted to the birth of this reticulated giraffe – the name for its subspecies – will help draw attention to threats to its species.
“Wild populations are silently heading towards extinction, with 40% of the wild giraffe population losing over three decades,” Tony Bright, founder of Brights Zoo, warned in the statement.
