A building designed by Renzo Piano to understand infinitesimality at CERN

A building designed by Renzo Piano to understand infinitesimality at CERN

The scene is unusual for an exhibition space: a large, plastic-wrapped instrument – an electric amplifier – is delivered and moved using a crane. A team is working to unload the strange object that will be installed in the building being completed, which is a large “tube” made of steel. It complements one of CERN’s new public space facilities, the Science Gateway, on the organization’s site in Meyrin, north of the canton of Geneva.

The complex, designed by architect Renzo Piano and consisting of three pavilions and two tubes connected by a long glass walkway, will receive the public from October 8 by offering a 900-seat hall, a café and five galleries, on a total area. With an area of 8000 square meters. The whole thing cost 100 million Swiss francs, was financed entirely by donations, and the largest shareholder was the car manufacturer Stellantis.
