Australian tennis player Mark Polmans failed to control his emotions during qualifying for the Shanghai tournament, so much so that he went from match point to disqualification within an instant.
On Tuesday, the fourth seed in the preliminary round was on course to beat Stefano Napolitano in two sets to secure his ticket to the main draw of the Chinese event. Pullmans led 6-5 in the tie-break, sent the ball home and reacted instantly.

140H The ATP ranked player immediately hit the ball out of frustration. However, it headed directly towards the referee’s chair, which was unable to avoid the projectile that was fired at high speed. It didn’t take long for the official to rule out the Australian, who suffered a blow to the head.
This incident brings to mind what happened between Canadian Denis Shapovalov and referee Arnaud Gabas. In 2017, during a Davis Cup match against Great Britain, the 17-year-old Ontario player punched a referee near his left eye after a gesture of frustration.
Shapovalov was disqualified and fined $7,000. Gabas underwent surgery to repair the fundus of his orbit.
