Hundreds of Australian firefighters were mobilized on Tuesday in the state of New South Wales, where Sydney is located, to battle nearly 70 wildfires that have killed one person and threatened several homes.
The body of a 56-year-old man was found by police between Monday and Tuesday in Temakok, a village north of Sydney, which had been destroyed by fire.
Dozens of homes were threatened by the fire, which has already burned more than 10,000 hectares, New South Wales Rural Fire Service Commissioner Rob Rogers said.
The fire is expected to last until the end of next week due to rising temperatures, Mr Rogers warned.
“Even though the danger has decreased in this area, there are still a lot of fires and they are still intense,” he continued.
Experts expect Australia’s fire season to be the most intense since the “black summer” of 2019-2020, when wildfires raged across this part of the Big Island.
Since then, conditions have been unusually wet, which has helped trees grow faster, increasing the amount of fuel available.
In September, the Australian Bureau of Meteorology declared an El Niño event, typically associated with rising temperatures and severe drought, which can lead to devastating bushfires.
