The 2023 Lamonica Cardiology/Biomedical Research Foundation PCL Prize was awarded to Stephane Hatem.
University Professor at Sorbonne University, Practitioner in Cardiovascular Physiology at Pitié-Salpetriere Hospital. Stefan Hatem is Director of the ICAN University Hospital Institute dedicated to Cardio-Metabolic Diseases and UMRs1166.
He devoted his entire research to studying atrial fibrillation (AF), the most common heart arrhythmia. Contribute to describing the molecular mechanism that controls cardiac electrical generation and how its dysregulation contributes to atrial fibrillation. Cardiomyocyte apoptosis and atrial myocardial fibrosis have been identified as other mechanisms of arrhythmia. He discovered the role played by adipose tissue in the occurrence of atrial fibrillation and its origin: the differentiation of progenitor cells located in the outer layer of the heart. His work contributed to the definition of atrial cardiomyopathy, which is today housed in the Atrial Fibrillation Management Center. They allowed him to gain international scientific recognition; Since 2021, he has coordinated a European H2020 network dedicated to atrial cardiomyopathy, a true culmination of this journey as a clinician-researcher.
The Academy will honor him during the awards ceremony held under the dome of the Institut de France, on November 21, 2023.
