XLCC is a subsidiary of British specialist site The Energist. The money has been earmarked to convert the former Hunterston B nuclear power station on the Ayrshire coast into a factory to make high voltage cables. The project aims to support the electricity connection between Morocco and the United Kingdom.
The Hunterston B plant will cease nuclear power generation in January 2022 after 46 years of operation. The factory in question will cost around 1.4 billion pounds sterling and is expected to employ 900 highly skilled workers on a permanent basis, according to British media. The overall mega-project, recognized by the British government as “Infrastructure of National Importance”, will require nearly 27 billion dollars (about 228 billion dirhams). The construction phase will include 2,000 permanent positions.
It aims to generate 3.6 gigawatts (GW) of electricity from renewable energy, or 8% of the UK’s electricity needs, by 2030 to power 7 million homes through new wind projects and solar power in Morocco, with generation capacity reaching 10.5 GW. This clean energy source will be carried by submarine cables, each 3,800 km long.
