In this great fantasy, Justine Berthelot and Mossi Espinoza bring a dance, acrobatic and theatrical adventure where the obsessive and the tragic form a drama underpinned by the political, environmental and social conflicts taking place in the Amazon region. Through references to the Fitzcarraldo and Aguirre of Werner Herzog’s cinema, they intend to mock the coloniser, the bestiality of men, and this eternal absurdity of predatory and destructive domination. “We do not make agreements with animals” raises the question of a fundamental thinking: the megalomania of Western man, determined to crush nature through his own culture. It’s about deconstructing this great myth of the white man, of the white God who came down to earth like the Indians in Fitzcarraldo who don’t believe in it, and who apparently never believed in it. This circus duo performs a jungle opera in which they play with representations of the jungle, the hyperbolic aspect of opera, and Amazonian cosmology.
That we do not make agreements with animals opens up a forest of presence, symbolic and everyday, inhabited by multiple faces, silks, vines and machines. He exposes this alienated reality with convincing ferocity, and exploits the absurdity of our hegemony-hungry societies in order to bring down the velvet curtain and reinstall us on the ground.
The struggle of monsters against our stupidity.
