Quebecers now get 10 cents per returnable container, with the exception of some already returnable bottles of 500 ml and over, which are returned at 25 cents, Consignaction notes.
In an interview with LCN, the CEO of the Quebec Beverage Container Recovery Association stated that all cans from 100 ml to 2 litres can be returned.
“Everything is going well on the floor,” says Normand Besson, while storing cans remains a challenge.
An additional 300 million cans will be recycled.
“We are currently adjusting our redemption locations to ensure we can meet the needs of retailers,” he continues.
He warns that the second phase, which will be launched in March 2025, will bring a new set of changes.
“This is an issue that will be in flux […] There will be more damaged containers. There is a whole infrastructure that will be put in place. We have to work very hard.”
Mr. Besson explains that November 1 was the ideal date to implement the transformation of Quebec’s deposit system.
“November was a good month to start depositing, because there are usually lower returns,” he said, adding that the increase in volume causes changes for collectors.
TVA News
Here are some citizen reactions collected by TVA Nouvelles regarding the changes made to the instructions:
“We were already recording, so not much has changed. It’s just that the amount is higher. Maybe this will encourage the world to save more,” one woman said.
“We deposit more, the dime is definitely worth it. “I’ve always registered it, so I’ll keep doing it,” continues one customer he met in front of a grocery store.
