Just 100 meters south of Lausanne station, the city church – that is, an urban church – has just seen the light of day. Immerse yourself in the new “Espace Maurice Zundel”, a place of light and encounter for travelers searching for meaning.
Under the care of Father Maurice Zundel, who lived in these quarters for the last thirty years of his life, this place became a laboratory. Behind large windows, it provides a welcoming and social space open to all. Higher space as an introduction to a more interior approach for those who desire it. You will then have to go down the stairs leading to the chapel and meditation space. Every morning, during the week, times of silence and prayer are held there, “according to the different paths of the Christian tradition,” explains Luc Rodin, the Jesuit in charge of the place.
Maurice Zundel
Maurice Zündel (1897-1975), a Swiss Catholic priest, influenced twentieth-century spirituality through his contemplative and mystical commitment. Born in Neuchâtel, he devoted his life to prayer and contemplation, addressing topics such as the nature of God and the intimate relationship between humanity and God. His writings, translated into several languages, offer poetic perspectives on spiritual quest. He lived the last thirty years of his life in Lausanne. The Maurice Zundel Foundation is now located at the headquarters of Espace Maurice Zundel. s
“We want to offer an escape from the hustle and bustle,” continues Veronica Delbac, responsible for cultural projects. In addition to daily meetings, Espace Maurice Zundel offers conferences or exhibitions. Currently, from Monday to Friday, during the semester, the animation team offers two highlights: in the morning “Meditation and Prayer” and at noon “Thanksgiving.” A welcoming presence and listening are provided each morning by volunteers.
“Maurice Zündel was a welcoming man, engaged in a demanding dialogue with his time,” explains Father Mark Dunzi, president of the association. Enterprise Maurice Zundel. He had an acute awareness of the greatness of man, and that he contributed to the growth of men and women towards greater generosity, brotherhood and sharing. Thus, Mark Dunzi views very favorably the choice of Sacred Heart Parish in Ouchey, the owner of the building, to honor the memory of Father Zundel. (cath.ch/pp/rz)
What is a city church?
The city church is a modern expression of the Christian faith characterized by its specific commitment to city life. In contrast to traditional churches, the City Church takes a more flexible approach, considering the city itself as a major site of its activity. These churches aim to adapt to the needs of urban residents, providing an inclusive spiritual community, often characterized by a contemporary atmosphere, dynamic worship services, and social initiatives aimed at positively impacting urban life. By integrating the Christian faith into the daily reality of city dwellers, city churches seek to create a relevant and accessible spiritual space within the hustle and bustle of cities. s
