Joe Biden and his entourage are living in denial. For more than a year, a majority of voters have been repeating that the president is too old to seek a second term, refusing to give him credit for the best economy in the Western world, and shrugging when they hear about his accomplishments, and when they hear about him. Moreover, a majority of them prefer Donald Trump in key states, according to several polls. This situation is due in part to Biden's almost disappearance and his inability to defend his record with force, clarity, and consistency. Will a blitzkrieg in the final months of the presidential campaign succeed in reversing this trend? Too little, too late, some believe, including William KristolWhich invites him to withdraw from the race. Can he still do it? Here's a plan B that would give him an honorable exit.
One clarification: I do not support this plan, not even with the inevitability of the previous analysis. Joe Biden has been underrated his entire life. But I do not deny that the 46th president may have made a huge mistake early last year when he refused to make room for another generation of Democratic politicians. This plan B will allow him to correct this mistake. It is presented by journalists Charlie Mathisian and Stephen Shepard from Politico, who listed it among the options available to Biden in this risky start to the presidential campaign. That would allow the 81-year-old president, a very proud man, to leave with his head held high and on his terms.
“The first thing is to allow the Democratic primary season to run its course, until June 4, when the last group of states hold their primaries, He writes Mathisian and Shepherd. Biden will finish as the clear winner, with far more than the 1,968 delegates needed to secure the nomination. Biden will then announce that he does not accept the nomination and release his delegates to support another candidate. He can insist that he remains fit to serve another term, but accepts public concerns about a president who could be 86 at the end of a second term. He can remind voters that he always said he was a bridge to the next generation of Democratic leaders. He might note that the economy is on the right track, and say that he once defeated Trump and protected American democracy. He did his duty. »
With this announcement, pollsters will rush to measure the chances of promising Democrats to confront Donald Trump, including state governors Gavin Newsom (California), Gretchen Whitmer (Michigan), J.B. Pritzker (Illinois), and Josh Shapiro (Pennsylvania), not to mention Kamala. Harris and other members of the Biden administration. It will be up to Democratic delegates, who will meet in Chicago on August 19 for their party's convention, to choose the candidates who will make up the Democratic Party ticket. This is an agreement worth following.
Foolish? If the poll results do not change by June or July, Joe Biden's insistence on staying in the race may be even more important.
Note: Thus begins day two of this blog's first fundraiser in 2024. Many thanks to all those who have already made their contribution and also to others who will do so during the day!
