The British government's bill to deport illegal immigrants to Rwanda violates basic human rights principles, the UN said on Monday (19 February). “The combined effects of this bill, which attempts to shield government actions from ordinary legal scrutiny, is in direct opposition to basic human rights principles.”UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Dürk said in a statement.
Conservative Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has made the speech the basis of his policy to combat illegal immigration and hopes to implement it ahead of legislative elections scheduled for this year. In mid-January, he called it quits “Urgent National Priority”.
The highly controversial law has been criticized by the head of the Anglican Church and the United Nations. On Monday February 12, a British parliamentary committee ruled on the plan “Fundamentally Irrelevant” with the country's human rights obligations.
