The Blues won against Australia (31-5) this Saturday evening during the third and final group game of this Vancouver tournament, for Antoine Dupont's first start with the French rugby sevens team. After victories over USA (24-12) and Samoa (40-7) last night, Jerome Darrett's men secured their third win in as many matches on Saturday night before they face Ireland in the quarter-finals. Sunday (4:28 am).
Three out of three for the Blues
The Blues had already qualified after these early wins, which is why Darrett rotated his squad for this third and final group match, giving DuPont, who entered within three minutes of the first two matches, the chance to show even more. He didn't miss the opportunity: he first recovered a ball on the ground (2nd) before finding his winger Aaron Grandtier Nganong with a clever jump pass at the first blue attempt (2nd). On his way, the winger managed to find Ryan Rebatz inside and take the lead (7-0, 5th). In the last minute before the break, another good move between DuPont and William Iraguha created a gap that sent Granditier Nganong to the test (12-0, 7th).
Back from the break, the 2021 World Player of the Year made his debut with the French team in 7 runs and had another feast to widen the gap a little further on the score (17-0, 8th). DuPont finished his game of the day with a counter-ruck, two minutes later in his 22. The Frenchman went on to score his fourth try in the 100-metre counter. Jordan Sefo added to the score before the siren (31-5, 15th), meanwhile Henry Palmer saved the honor for the Australian side.
