Cheese fondue put to the test

Cheese fondue put to the test

How comforting this cheese fondue is after a lovely day out! Having lived in Switzerland, I can say that this was my favorite meal after a great day of skiing. If you share my taste for this dish, here I offer my analysis of ready-to-cook commercial cheese fondue. It's time for the test bench!

Our analysis

6 cheese fondue selections were the subject of our analysis.

The serving size is standardized to be 60 g (about 60 ml or 1/4 cup). Each serving provides:

  • Between 120 and 180 calories
  • Between 9 and 14 grams of fat, including 5 to 9 grams of saturated fat
  • Between 8 and 11 grams of protein
  • Between 270 and 440 mg of sodium
  • Between 250 and 350 mg of calcium

It becomes difficult to make a list of the best and worst options, considering that the fattier fondue is often the less salty, and vice versa. Between salt and fat, who wins?

Less fat

Authentic fondue fromalbe I got the best overall score. It is among the lowest-fat options (9 g) and contains less saturated fat (6 g) and sodium (320 mg) than average. It wins in terms of moderation in total fat, saturated fat, and sodium. However, it is among the least protein-rich types of fondue (8 g). Provides 300 mg of calcium. Sodium phosphate is found in the ingredients list.

Three Cheese Fondue from L'Isle-aux-Grues from 1001 Fondues Rich in fat (14 g) and saturated fat (9 g). Since fat provides more calories than other macronutrients, it is the most caloric type of fondue, containing 180 calories per serving.
