Cases of monkeypox infection in the United States have nearly doubled, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
A total of 511 cases were reported as of mid-March, compared with 287 during the same period last year, the CDC said.
New York City has reported more than 100 cases so far this year, up from 30 in 2023.
Simian pox, formerly known as monkey pox, is a disease caused by the simian orthopoxvirus. It is a viral infection that can spread between humans through objects and surfaces touched by a person infected with monkeypox and sometimes from the environment to people, according to the World Health Organization.
In the environment where monkeypox virus is present in some wild animals, it can spread from infected animals to people who come into contact with them.
The first cases of infection in the United States were reported in May 2022. Since then, the country has reported more than 32,000 cases, as well as 58 deaths, according to the CDC.
The outbreak led the Biden administration to declare a public health emergency in 2022, and the outbreak has largely been contained by vaccinating high-risk groups.
