A person wins $1.3 billion in the Powerball lottery in the United States

The winning numbers drawn early Sunday morning were: 22, 27, 44, 52, 69 and Powerball Red 9.

Until the latest drawing, no one had won a Powerball jackpot since New Year's Day, 41 consecutive drawings without a jackpot winner, matching a string of drawings without a winner in 2022 and 2021.

The $1.3 billion jackpot ranks as the eighth-largest lottery prize in U.S. history. This is one winner who chooses to pay an annuity extended over 30 years. Had he chosen the cash prize, he would have received a smaller sum of US$608.9 million.

Lottery prizes won are subject to federal tax, and many states also impose a tax on lottery winnings.

As prices rise, the enthusiasm for purchasing tickets increases and the chances of winning the jackpot decrease. A Powerball ticket holder had a 1 in 292.2 million chance of getting the winning combination.

A press release stated that the drawing was scheduled to take place on Saturday evening, but it was postponed until 2:30 a.m. Sunday at the Florida lottery studio to allow one of the organizers to complete the required procedures.

“Powerball rules require that every ticket sold nationally be verified and matched on two different computer systems before the winning numbers are drawn,” the statement read.

“This is done to ensure that every ticket sold for the Powerball drawing is accounted for and has an equal chance of winning. Tonight we need more time to complete this initial process on one of the lands.

The Powerball lottery is available in 45 US states, as well as Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.
