Super Size Me director dies at the age of 53

American director Morgan Spurlock, who became famous thanks to the documentary Super Size Me, has died at the age of 53.

The director's family confirmed the sad news on Friday. He died on Thursday in New York State after complications from cancer.

“It was a sad day as we had to say goodbye to my brother Morgan,” Craig Spurlock said. “Morgan gave so much to society through his art, ideas and generosity. Today the world has lost a true creative genius and a special man. I am so proud to have been able to work with him.”

Morgan Spurlock rose to international fame in 2004, when his film Super Size Me was released in theaters. In this documentary, we can follow the director as he sets himself the challenge of eating exclusively food from McDonald's for an entire month.

He also reduced his level of physical activity, in order to clearly illustrate the effects of fast food and a sedentary lifestyle on the human body.

While filming his film, Morgan Spurlock claims he gained 25 pounds, in addition to suffering from liver dysfunction and depression.

The film caused controversy in the United States, but also attracted criticism for the director's style.

However, the documentary won several awards and received an Academy Award nomination.
