“Political Disagreements”: Canada Day parade in Montreal cancelled

The organizing committee of Montreal's Canada Day Parade announced that the event is scheduled to be held on 1any Next July was canceled due to “political differences.”

In a statement on Wednesday, the event's main organizer, Nicholas Quinn, said local government leaders had made his task difficult.

“They made it very difficult for me to organize the show,” he said. “Last year, they asked to fill out the same documents multiple times to slow down progress. In fact, last year's event had to be reorganized several times to satisfy city officials.”

He added: “At first I thought it was directed at me alone because of politics.” “I needed outside help from the offices of various elected officials at different levels of government to run the show last year. In my 24 years of experience with the show, I have only had to reach out to an outside source for help once, and that was in 2018. I asked several other organizers about their experiences and they also had issues with the City of Montreal.

Last year, Ottawa reportedly intervened to remove parts of the display. The show's budget was also reduced to the 2013 level, which complicated the organizers' work, according to the press release.

The Canada Day Parade has been held in Montreal since 1977. It attracts approximately 120,000 spectators each year, according to the organization.
