Microsoft provides some information about Windows 11 and eligible Windows 7 PCs. It will not be possible to upgrade your PC. Installation from scratch will be required.
Microsoft discontinued Windows 7 in January 2020. Since then, this environment has been left to its own devices. It is no longer a target for security updates and bug fixes. This situation does not prevent it from remaining popular especially for reasons of application compatibility. In many cases, additional security measures have been taken while Microsoft on its part offers personal but paid maintenance.
Microsoft hopes, however, that Windows 11 will be the driver behind the massive abandonment of Windows 7. The process is likely to be a challenge for older computers and the bad news won’t help things out.
Windows 11 and eligible Windows 7 PCs
Computers running Windows 7 that are able to meet the system requirements to run Windows 11 will not benefit from the upgrade. Obviously, a fresh installation of the operating system will be necessary. You’ll need to back up your data and prepare to reinstall all your software, games, and apps.
Microsoft . defines
Most devices available for purchase will be affected by upgrading to Windows 11. You will have the option to upgrade, clean install, or redesign Windows 10 devices to upgrade to Windows 11. For devices running Windows 7 that meet hardware requirements, you will need to clean install or re-imaging to get direct access to Windows 11.”
All this will complicate the task because the process requires time in particular to back up the data. Windows 11 is expected to arrive as a free upgrade for eligible devices in the later months of 2021.
