Heavy rain and flooded roads in London

Thunderstorms lashing southeast England caused flooding in the late afternoon on the streets of London, as transport was disrupted.

Rescue services are facing “heavy flooding” across the British capital, Mayor Sadiq Khan tweeted in the evening. “Buses, tubes and trains have been damaged,” he added, urging Londoners to check their route and avoid crossing flooded areas on foot or by car.

In the south of the British capital, near the Queenstown road station, police blocked traffic on a street that had become impassable, as the road was flooded, especially under railway bridges, an AFP journalist noted.

The flood caused a number of red double-decker buses to block the middle of the street, and one of their drivers told AFP that water reached the floor of his car. “It’s wet all over!” He reported the man who introduced himself only by his first name, Eric.

London firefighters said on Twitter they had received around 300 calls to report flooding in the southwest of the capital.

The British Met Office has raised the orange alert for thunderstorms in and around London until 7pm, but thunderstorms and heavy rain are expected until Monday in the south of the country. Some areas may even see up to 100mm of rain in a few hours on Sunday evening.
