Tourists are counted in their district of residence and not in their places of vacation, according to the “Southwest” report.
The data is clear: the delta variant is progressing everywhere in France. But summer vacations and tourism can take a toll on the numbers. In fact, the data pertains only to the population of each region. Tourists who test positive at their vacation place are “registered at their usual place of residence”, as admitted Southwest Benot Elleboode, Director General of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Regional Health Agency (ARS).
A defect that does not, therefore, allow the real infection rate in the French departments to be known. Thus, although all coastal administrations have already reached their maximum alert threshold, the numbers may be higher in some areas.

The problem is new. This summer, the emergence of the delta variant was surprised by the high rate of infection. Last year, the infection rate was relatively low until the end of August. And if Public Health France had considered revising the data on Covid-19 cases, the idea was finally abandoned.
