At the edge of our solar system and halfway to the nearest stars is a collection of icy objects known as the Oort Cloud floating in space. Transient stars sometimes propel these icy travelers toward the sun, and scientists see them as long-tailed comets. Theoretically, the basis for understanding the origin of our solar system lies in the fact that in these remote regions there are only bodies of ice and, of course, nothing of stone.
That changed in 2021, when an international team of scientists, astronomers, and professional and amateur astronomers, led by Western meteorological physicists, captured images and video of a rocky meteorite as it flew through the sky over central Alberta in a ball of fire. Since then, scientists have concluded that all signs point to the object being in the middle of the Oort Cloud. The results have been published in the journal natural astronomy.
“This discovery supports a completely different model for the formation of the solar system, which supports the idea that a large amount of rocky material coexisted with icy bodies in the Oort cloud. This result is not explained by the currently preferred models of solar system formation,” said researcher in meteorite physics, Dennis Vida. , “This will change the rules of the game.”
All of the previous stone fireballs had come very close to the Earth, making this object, which had apparently traveled great distances, completely unexpected. Modern cameras from the Global Fireball Observatory (GFO), developed in Australia and operated by the University of Alberta, detected a rocky meteorite the size of a grapefruit (about 2 kg). Using instruments from the Global Meteorite Network, scientists calculated that it is moving in an orbit normally reserved for long-period icy comets in the Oort Cloud.
“In 70 years of regular fireball sightings, this is one of the most bizarre events on record. They underscore the regional office’s strategy, developed five years ago, that extended the ‘fishing net’ to 5 million square kilometers of the sky and collected scientific research from all over the world. “.
During its journey, Alberta’s fireball plunged much deeper into the atmosphere than icy bodies in similar orbits, and smashed like a fireball dropped meteorites—necessary evidence that it was well made of stone. On the contrary, comets are mostly thin snowballs mixed with dust that slowly evaporates as they approach the sun. Dust and gases inside form a kind of tail that can stretch for millions of kilometers.
“We want to explain how this rocky meteorite got so far away because we want to understand our origins. The better we understand the conditions in which the solar system was formed, the better we understand what is necessary for the emergence of life,” said the scientist.
