The body of a 16-year-old boy who went missing in north Queensland's Torres Strait was found on Thursday. He had injuries from a crocodile bite.
Sea travel turned into drama in Australia's northernmost Torres Strait on Thursday. The two youths, aged 13 and 16, were traveling in the swamps of Saipai Island, 4 km off Papua New Guinea, when their boat capsized.
Both boys tried to swim to shore, but only the 13-year-old was able to do so and alert emergency services.
A crocodile 3 to 4 meters long
After searching for the other 16-year-old boy, his body was finally found by teams sent to the scene. Police believed the injuries on the remains were consistent with a crocodile attack.
Police are yet to confirm whether the victim drowned or was killed by an animal. A crocodile can measure up to three to four meters.
About 400 people live on Saipai Island. This small community has indicated that they want the animal captured and removed from the water.
