Australian Rugby Union president Hamish McLennan spoke to recently sacked England coach Eddie Jones on the phone, Australian media reported on Sunday.
The 62-year-old Australian coach was sacked by the English FA last week, nine months before the next World Cup, at the end of XV de la Rose’s worst season since 2008.
Meanwhile, current Australian coach Dave Rennie is under pressure after winning just five of his 14 matches in a year.
“I spoke to him yesterday” (Saturday), McLennan told the Sydney Morning Herald of Eddie Jones. “I wanted to know what state of mind he was in after the events of last week,” she argued.
According to the newspaper, Jones has not yet been offered a specific offer and the Rugby Australia chief did not indicate in his profile whether he was interested after the next World Cup in France in 2023 or 2024.
Jones has been touted as a possible Wallabies coach from the 2025 British and Irish Lions tour and then the World Cup in Australia two years later.
“You’d have to be crazy not to consider using your brain, but I know Eddie has a lot to offer,” McLennan added.
For Jones, he told the newspaper that “everything” is “possible” and that he is “always ready to take on a new challenge,” even if it’s complicated.
For three days he was listed as a consultant for the Castres Olympic Games in France.
He wants to try his hand at playing in the Southern Hemisphere’s National Rugby League (NRL) XIII in Australia and New Zealand, and he doesn’t hide it.
