Currently, the Canadian has seven defenders in his active lineup. We’re talking about Mike Matheson, Gustav Lindstrom, Justin Barron, Jayden Strobel, Kayden Guehle, Matthias Norlender, and Jonathan Kovacevic.
In a few games, Norlander was the extra player. He and Strobel were called up to replace Arber Cicaj and Jordan Harris, who are currently on the injured list.
And let’s just say that Strobel and Norlender know they’re living on borrowed time – Especially Norlander, who did not have a chance to play in the NHL this season despite having a good training camp.
Why do they know this? Because eventually the reinforcements will return.
In fact, when we look at everything, it’s easy to come to the following conclusion: a few injured people are about to return, which will put pressure on the guys who are there.
First, it’s worth noting that Arber Xhekaj, who is expected to return to the game this week, skated this morning, as Renaud Lavoie reported. That doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll play tonight, but he could be back quickly. Saturday? who knows.

We also need to talk about David Savard. After all, as we can read In an old historical record by Renaud LavoieSavard should return in the first days of December.
He’s been skating for a few days…and again this morning, skating with the others.
Matthias Norlender, Arber Cicaj, Michael Pizzetta, Jake Allen and Kayden Primeau are skating this morning. David Savard did it before his teammates. @CanadiensMTL

What this means is that soon, two defensemen should be back in the game, if all goes well, and that’s not counting Jordan Harris, who is also on the injured list and whose absence is indefinite.
Chris Weidman, it’s – oh and forget it.
Since the Canadian has three goalkeepers and 13 forwards, he should only have seven defenders. Norlender and Strobel, even if he doesn’t deserve it, are candidates to return to Laval if Chicaj and Savard return soon.
Among the healthy ones, Kaiden Guhle and Justin Barron aren’t eligible for waivers… but don’t hold your breath: They’re in town to stay. Also note that Gustav Lindstrom is about to have to go up waivers again to go to Laval, if that’s what CH wants.
It would be a bigger problem if Harris, Chicaj, and Savard returned before everyone else was injured… but we’re not there yet.
But what we also have to take into account, when it comes to talking about congestion, is above all the fact that the Canadian, logically, only dresses six defenders per match.
If Savard is there, we might think bringing him in along with Mike Matheson could help the club’s cause. Especially since Gohli and Baron currently form an excellent duo from the Top 4 and are not worth dismantling.
This means that Lindstrom, Kovacevic and Šikai will have to fight for the right to play a few minutes in each match instead of taking to the stands. This would certainly prompt Norlander and Strobel to return to Laval.
This is where congestion will also have an impact. After all, there are four players who could be called up contractually: Brady Keiper, Nicolas Beaudin, William Trudeau, and Logan Melo, who are all guaranteed playing time in the NHL this season. They fight with Strobl and Norlender.
Want some infighting? This is about to be a problem… Unless some guys get hurt again.

The Rangers are using a rare technique to dominate the NHL in the faceoff circle, and I’m sure every garage league center will try it too!
