After a difficult start to the season, EHC Kloten decided to sack their head coach.
The news sparked a reaction here because David Reinbacher returned to Europe to take over the coach that Montreal trusts.
We knew Gerry Fleming would give him plenty of ice… but we realized the former club driver was playing Reinbacher perhaps too much.
The defender picked up an assist today in his club’s defeat, which now gives him four points in his last five matches.
General manager Larry Mitchell, who is replacing Fleming (temporarily) behind the bench, has cut Reinbacher’s playing time by about four minutes per game…
It clearly works.
Kloten’s new coach reduced Reinbacher’s ice time by about 4 minutes per game. Today, he got his third assist in the last four games. Maybe he was too much to play at 21+. He is a teenager still building his strength and stamina. Smart moves.

The Canadian wanted to prioritize his young player’s progress and by getting ice time he will improve.
On the other hand, there is a difference between having a good time playing and getting burned out game after game.
EHC Kloten must put Reinbacher in a position to succeed and that won’t happen by burning the youngster.
By playing a little lower, a defenseman can better control his energy on the ice and this is also important to know before moving to the NHL.
He’s gaining experience, basically. That’s how I see things.
Recall that the Canadian player refused to participate in the World Junior Championships because he wanted to focus on his development.
The WJC experience would have been great, but the problem was that his country was not playing in the top flight this year. He would have wasted his time playing at a lower level than the Swiss League.
