(Miami) – The White House and elected Democrats on Thursday sharply criticized a new law in Florida, passed the day before by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, that removes references to climate change from official state transcripts.
Federal executive spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre commented that this legislation is a “disgrace.”
“Climate change is an indisputable fact,” responded Frederica Wilson, a Democrat who represents Florida in the House of Representatives.
This southeastern state, known for its almost constant sunshine, suffered record temperatures during last year's summer heatwave.
That did not prevent Ron DeSantis, the unsuccessful candidate for the Republican Party's presidential nomination in November against Donald Trump, from defending and signing the new law, which satisfied his many climate-skeptical voters.
“The legislation I signed became law today […] “We will keep wind turbines off our shores, but gasoline in our tanks and keep China out of our jurisdiction,” the governor said.
“We are restoring common sense to our approach to energy and rejecting the agenda of extreme environmental fanatics,” added Mr. DeSantis, who is known for his fight against lockdowns during the Covid-19 pandemic and against what he sees as undeserved rights granted to transgender people. .
