Would Tim Scott have been elected to the United States Senate if Nikki Haley had not returned the favor by appointing him first to the Senate to replace Jim DeMint, who stepped down in 2012? We will never know. But the former Republican congressman certainly owes a debt of gratitude to the former governor of South Carolina. Did he return the favor when he counted it? Not really: After withdrawing from the race for the Republican Party's presidential nomination in 2024, he betrayed it by supporting Donald Trump.
Many believe Scott has ambitions to become Trump's running mate. Indeed, the most pessimistic among them believe that he followed this support for the former president by announcing his engagement to his “girlfriend” to help his cause, in light of the rumors that have been circulating for a long time about his sexual orientation. It remains to be seen whether this trick, if there is any, might convince Trump.
Meanwhile, Trump contributed to Scott's humiliation on Tuesday night by displaying him like a hunting trophy with another former rival, Vivek Ramaswamy, on the stage where he delivered his angry speech after his victory in New Hampshire. He added to the humiliation by saying Scott must “really hate” Hailey for supporting him instead of her.
Trump said: “Have you ever thought about the fact that she nominated you, Tim? …And you are a senator from her state.” “You must really hate her.” »
Scott, the smiling, devout embodiment of conservatism, saw fit to step up to the microphone and interrupt Trump to say: “I love you, that's all.” »
