Hurricane Beryl: Here are the travel destinations to avoid

The federal government is urging Canadians to avoid non-essential travel to certain destinations in the Caribbean due to Hurricane Beryl.

The risk level for six countries was adjusted Tuesday to warn Canadian travellers of the risks associated with the Category 4 hurricane.

Here are the destinations that travelers should avoid:

– Jamaica

– Mexico (east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, from Chetumal to Cabo Catuche)

– Cayman Islands

– Union Island (Saint Vincent and the Grenadines)

– Carriacou (Granada)

– Little Martinique (Grenada)

Hurricane Beryl was initially classified as a Category 5 storm earlier in the week, but was downgraded to a Category 4 storm Tuesday afternoon.

The hurricane is heading toward Jamaica and then the Cayman Islands on Wednesday.

It is also expected to affect southern Haiti and Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula on Thursday evening.

Many Quebecers traveling to Jamaica are concerned about the arrival of Hurricane Beryl.

Air Transat operated three repatriation flights Tuesday evening to bring Canadian travellers home.

A Quebec resident told TVA Nouvelles on Wednesday morning that he and his family were holed up in their hotel room while waiting for the hurricane to pass.

If you have a trip planned to the Caribbean in the next few days, contact your travel agent or check with Travel Warnings Issued by the Government of Canada.
