Through numerical simulations, the team observed two possible behaviors, neither of which propagates. If the attraction is too weak, as in diffusive electrophoresis, the particles move toward the salt-rich regions by moving from one recycling cell to another, which they do much more quickly than they would in the absence of flow. On the other hand, when the attraction is slightly stronger, as with chemoattraction, the bacteria are completely blocked in the recirculating cells. These phenomena are explained by the heterogeneous distribution of salt and nutrients along the lines separating the recirculating cells. The scientists also showed that it is possible to define a blocking criterion that is independent of flow velocity. According to this criterion, bacteria will be judged to have consumed almost all the nutrients in their cell before they can escape! Experiments are underway to clarify these counterintuitive behaviors.
