The best person to comment on Connor McDavid's decision to eschew the Conn Smythe Trophy is without a doubt Jean-Sébastien Giguere.
Giguère was, before Monday evening, the last member of a losing team to receive this trophy given to the best player in the playoffs.
His image with individual honors, which he didn't care about after losing in the Stanley Cup Final, captured the imagination.
The photo that McDavid refused to take, because he did not come out of the locker room to receive the trophy with Gary Bettman.
“I've experienced that and I think it's a huge honor to play in the NHL,” he said. Giguère pleaded in an interview with BPM Sports. You are never bigger than the sport, you may be the best player in the world, but the sport is still bigger than you. “I was hoping he would progress, although I understand it is difficult.”
By agreeing to run despite suffering defeat, McDavid could also have been a role model for young people, Giguere said.
“Young people look up to him as a superhero and he could show them how to win and how to lose. It was a great image to see him accept that trophy.”
If McDavid's decision was not unanimous, the same cannot be said for the vote that awarded him the Conn Smythe Award. All journalists who had the honor of voting gave him their first place vote.
