List of the most expensive cities in the world: Toronto wins the award in Canada

Toronto is the city with the highest cost of living in Canada for the second year in a row, according to Mercer’s annual rankings, released Thursday.

Of the 227 cities across five continents assessed, Queen City ranked 90th^H world ranking, down one place from last year.

Vancouver is the second most expensive city in the country, down eight places, to 116^H.

Montreal and Ottawa are ranked 135th, respectively^H And at 137^H ranked, down ten and five places in one year, and Calgary, Canada’s least expensive city, dropped four places to 145.^H.

Mercer’s annual survey counts 227 cities around the world and compares prices for more than 200 products and services, such as housing, transportation, food, and clothing.

Canadian cities, the least expensive in North America

Canadian cities remain the least expensive in North America, according to the ranking, all down from last year.

The most expensive city in North America is New York (6^H in the global ranking), followed by Los Angeles (11) and San Francisco (14). All cities in the US have also gained ranks since last year, notably Detroit (+27) and Houston and Cleveland (+24 each).

Other expensive cities in Europe include London (17^H world ranking), Vienna (25), Amsterdam (28), Prague (33) (which has moved up 27 places since last year) and Helsinki (34).
