(Anahuac) – A drought has killed thousands of fish as a lake in northern Mexico dries up, an AFP photographer said Wednesday.
Volunteers dumped lime on Wednesday to prevent decaying fish carcasses from causing diseases around Lake Bustillos (3,300 km away).2) in the state of Chihuahua.
The area emanates a foul odor, and in some places the swampy ground makes it difficult for vehicles used to collect dead fish to pass.
The municipality of the neighboring town of Cuauhtémoc posted an advertisement: “We are looking for temporary employees to clean Lake Bustillos.”
The water level is on average less than 50% of its usual level, according to local authorities.
“As the amount of water decreases, the pollutants become more concentrated and affect the species that live here,” Irma de la Peña Meraz, head of the environment department of the city of Cuauhtémoc, explained to the press.
The first dead fish appeared a week ago.
As of May 31, moderate, severe, or exceptional drought has affected 89.58% of Mexican territory (nearly 2 million km²).2), according to a map from the National Water Commission (Conagua).
Temperatures broke records, even in the capital, Mexico City, which has a population of nine million people, where it reached 34.2 degrees.
