“Mitch Marner vs. Seth Jones (one on one), who says no? »

Although Mitch Marner was seen chatting with Craig Berube in a cafe last week, that doesn't mean his future is guaranteed in Toronto.

In fact, his name in particular comes up when we talk about a potential trade this summer with the Leafs.

This does not change at the moment.

Frank Seravalli participated To the “Big Show” podcast. An insider told the Daily Faceoff out loud that the chances of Marner staying in the Queen City are there very thin.

So he created a trade proposal that would send Marner to Chicago… and that would bring Seth Jones to Toronto.

For him, even if the players were swapped for each other, it might make sense for both clubs:

Serravalli called Seth Jones his “number one defenseman” and in Toronto the blue line needs to improve as the club's defense was inconsistent last season.

That said it's often the same problem that appears there.

The proposal is particularly exciting for Hawks fans: the club will have the opportunity to acquire an excellent striker…

But the club will be especially fortunate to surround Connor Bedard, the man who scores goals, with one of the best playmakers in the entire NHL.

After all, Marner has (on average) 55 assists per season since the start of his big league career, and could be quite useful for a sniper like Bedard.

It could also work out salary-wise because Seth Jones makes less per year ($9.5 million)… but the difference is he still has six seasons left on his current contract.

The deal expires at the end of the 2029-2030 season, which is a long time for a defenseman who appears to be slowing down for a year or two already.

Note that Marner will be free as air next summer (2025).

This is where Brad Treliving's enthusiasm could dampen, in my opinion.

Yes, it would help improve the defense in some way, but does the Leafs GM want to be stuck with a bad contract for that long?

Unless the Hawks decide to keep part of Jones' salary, but still… is today's Seth Jones worth it?
