– Long-term Covid disease is similar to a chronic disease
Faced with the long-term effects of Covid that can be very disabling, CHUV and Unisanté have opened a consultation in Lausanne for patients with these persistent symptoms.
CHUV and Unisanté have opened a private consultation for patients who complain of persistent symptoms after an acute phase of Covid-19. The first evaluation showed, after six months, that multidisciplinary care is necessary for this prolonged illness resembling a chronic disease.
The long-term effects of Covid-19 can be very devastating, Unisanté explains Thursday in statment. Months later, patients still showed one or more symptoms related to Covid-19, such as fatigue, breathing problems or loss of smell and taste. This syndrome sometimes appears after the development of an asymptomatic form of the disease.
In Lausanne, a multidisciplinary consultation under the responsibility of Unisanté opened its doors on May 1, 2021. Within six months, it had received about seventy patients, referred by their attending physician.
The majority of these patients are between 36 and 55 years old and have been infected during the second wave of Covid-19. They suffer from chronic fatigue, difficulty breathing, cognitive impairment, chest pain, gastrointestinal or taste disturbances, and muscle aches in particular. Almost everyone feels fatigued at least, and some have two or three symptoms.
It’s hard to object
Medical examinations make it possible to identify some consequences, such as pulmonary lesions. Other symptoms are difficult to identify, the press release confirms. It is also impossible to determine how long these symptoms will last.
In all these respects, long-Covid is like a chronic disease, Unisanté says. This chronic disease should be the subject of specific long-term care in collaboration with the treating physicians.
Consulting Unisanté offers specialized multidisciplinary support in internal medicine, physical activity / cardiology and psychiatry. All in combination with the departments of Pulmonology, Immunology, Infectious Diseases, Otolaryngology, Sleep Disorders, Neuroscience and Neuropsychology at CHUV List Partners.
